De Boomse Poort

Located in downtown Boom, on a wedge-shaped site, on Henri Spillemaeckersstraat, gestalt architects conducted a study for a high-rise development.

The site is characterized by a 1950s high-rise, 12-story residential tower as its immediate neighbor. The base houses the local City Theatre. Between the two tower volumes, in function of the public City Theatre, a new foyer volume with brasserie was provided.

The new high-rise tower has a stepped volumetry and thus incorporates the different building heights from its immediate surroundings. Thus fifteen building layers are gradually created. Between the foyer and the new high-rise tower, a thoroughfare is provided which promotes pedestrian connection to public transportation and downtown.

The overhang above the plinth creates a specific appearance. The facade withdraws from the street, creating intimacy and orientation with a small-town character.

The project envisions mixed-use composition with a commercial pedestal followed by a base of office spaces and thirteen gradually diminishing residential layers.

In doing so, the ensemble aspires to a balanced projection of the contemporary city where public services, living, working and leisure exist together as one vibrant and qualitative entity.
