Zelzate Housing

Three building blocks will be composed of a repeating composition of multiple group homes. The façade and building block sizes reference the connected row houses of the surrounding area. A set of 35 apartments is created, anchored in the local urban texture. The trampling creates a specific appearance that optimizes the orientation and experience of the green outdoor space.

The footprint is reduced as much as possible without sacrificing interior spaces. A deliberate choice was made for low-rise and group homes with 5 apartments each so that no expensive and maintenance demanding elevators have to be provided.

Each group home consists of five vmsw-compliant two-bedroom apartments. Two ground floor apartments one of which is wheelchair accessible, two second floor apartments and one second floor apartment as an accent layer. This creates 5 types, each organized together around a common entrance and stairwell with technical storage. Ground-level apartments enjoy a garden, while the remaining apartments have a spacious terrace, conceived as an extension of the interior space.

Social interaction is encouraged through a neighborhood plaza with petanque courts and green play space.
